The Legacy of Tron
Here’s one for the record books. Tron was easily the most visually stunning movie to ever come out… at the time of release, which was 1982. This was the first time a movie relied so heavily on non-traditional/practical FX. Something we see running rampant in the past decade (Star Wars prequels, Avatar, etc). It was a surprise hit from Disney and has since become an ultimate cult classic. If you’re like me, this movie probably came out before you were born and most of your parents remember it. I would venture a hypothesis and say it is directly responsible for the aforementioned multitude of ultra-heavy CG films and has been a major inspiration for current, past and even future generations of film makers.
I’m not here to talk about Tron though, I’m here to talk about it’s almost three decade later sequel. Tron Legacy. Not coming out until Dec 17th of this year, it’s a long ways away, but ever since the teaser trailer showed at Comic-Con back in 2008(!), the hype around it has been growing. It is being directed by absolute newcomer Joseph Kosinski. To talk a little about this man whose name I just learned, he’s got some big ambition to go along with his little experience. I’ll be talking about him again as well as one of his upcoming (and instantaneously looking forward to) projects. It seems SF will get a rejuvenation with Tron Legacy under his direction.
It looks as though it’s being written by a hodge-podge group, though it does include a writer from the original film. Jeff Bridges, who has been in tons of movies, will be reprising his role as Kevin Flynn. His son will be played by Garret Hedlund of Eragon infamy.
From what I’ve gathered, after Kevin escaped the first time he had his son, then two years later went missing. Now, when Hedlunds character (Sam) is 27, he goes in search of his father, who has been trapped inside the Tron world for 25 years. If you haven’t seen the first movie, go see it, I definitely want to watch it again just so I can re-familiarize myself with it. I have a strong feeling that this is going to bring Tron to life for another set of generations, seeing as the original has bridged itself between several.
I’m looking forward to this movie and can’t wait till we get to see a little bit more. For now, here’s the teaser.
