The Sun As You’ve Never Seen It
After My Sci-Fi moved to its new host, the e-mail client had never been set up. If anyone tried sending anything, sorry for the bounce back. E-mailing me at jonulf@myscifi.org will now work. Sorry for any inconvenience.
Over three months ago NASAs Solar Dynamic Observatory was launched into space to little fanfare. Equipped with the Extreme Ultraviolet Variability Experiment, the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager as well as the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly, it takes a closer and more advanced look at how the Sun affects the Earth. That’s putting it in overly simple terms as well. We could go into depth about all the science behind this crazy piece of equipment, but it might bore you. If you’re really interested just head over to http://sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov/ for the full work up. Just know that despite loss of public interest and lagging budget, NASA will still be a major powerhouse in driving research and providing fuel for continued technological enhancements, as its always done. Hopefully the SDO will provide us with a new generation of better satellite technology and a greater understanding of how our light source affects the earth systems.
I’ll spare you a little time and repost some the awesome images brought back.
