The Avengers
2
The Avengers is a fairly unique movie. From everything I know of, no other movie has brought together this many characters from their own, stand-alone films. We’ve had wonderful trilogies and lengthy sagas, but never has Hollywood gambled on such a venture like this. How do you mesh more than a fistful of independent, strong characters that an audience has gotten to know? How do you make a coherent story that wont alienate those that might only enjoy one particular character?
The Hunger Games

Full disclosure, I haven't read the book, and I don't intend to anytime soon. I was pretty dead set against seeing this movie. Because no matter what anyone says, it does fall squarely in the sci-fi genre, and that made me bias towards this young upstart of a franchise for a few reasons. As a non-reader of the book (of which I appear to be the only one), I entered the theater. At once I found myself emotionally attaching to Katniss. Her situation was at once obvious but complex. The love she had for her sister was palpable, believable and quite real. Immediately my own feelings for those I loved and wanted to protect became intertwined with hers.

As the title says, this is the 100th post on MySciFi. I could think of no better topic than this: Why the Star Wars prequels should be forgotten.
Chronicle, Something Refreshing

A couple friends and I went to see Chronicle last night. None of us really had high expectations but were just curious to see how it was. This movie is about the journey of three high school kids that stumble upon a mysterious object that gives them powers.
I wont give too much more of the plot away, because despite the meager $12 million budget of this film, it's definitely worth seeing. Especially since this weekends re-release of The Phantom Menace in 3D, trust me, see Chronicle instead, it's better.
‘Rise’ to the Occasion

This post began as a reply to a comment a good friend and family member posted to my Google+ post about me thinking Rise of the Planet of the Apes was a smart sci-fi. I've only done some light editing to preserve my reaction.
Cowboys & Aliens; Not All Bad

After seeing the first preview for this movie, a hefty groan mixed with laughter escaped my lips. My expectations for this movie were pretty low, but as the months to its release became fewer, I found that Cowboys & Aliens became slightly more appealing. This was good, because as I sat in the piss poor excuse of a theater I watched it in, my mind was able to be cleared of any previous judgement. Almost exactly two hours later, walking out of the theater, feelings of satisfaction washed over me. Not overly or underly, just plain old satisfied. And to be honest, that's all this movie is, satisfying.
Green Lantern, A Lesson on Expectations and Comic Book Movies

Start the movie on Earth. Let us actually get to know the main characters and find out who they are before major change is thrust upon them (or let the audience know what the characters dont).
Don’t tell us the entire plot of the movie in the opening scene. We already know it’s a superhero movie [...]
Super 8, not so super

Everyone knows who did this movie. Spielberg and Abrams. What’s very interesting about this movie, is that you’d be able to name those two film makers even if you didn’t know they were already involved. Especially if you’re over 25 or just familiar with Spielberg pre-1990, and have seen Lost, [...]
