It’s too bad she won’t live…
Feb 28th @ 6:00AM
…but then again, who does? Fantastic last words to a fantastic movie. Blade Runner can be considered a vis major in and of itself. Directed by Ridley Scott, a master of film, and based off of the novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” written by Phillip K. Dick. This movie has always stood out from a lot of sci-fi and has remained an important piece of the cinematic pie. I never actually knew why until I watched it last night. Having [...]
Science Fiction at the Oscars
Feb 26th @ 6:00AM
If you’ve been following me, or are a fan of sci-fi, you’ll know that 2009 was a big year for the genre. There were a slew of good movies released, many were box office bombs, but the majority were artistically successful. Yet the biggest surprise to come out of last year, didn’t actually happen till a few weeks ago. Unfortunately this news was overshadowed by the sensation that surrounded it. This event was the Academy announcing the nominations for best picture, which [...]
2012: The Disaster Movie to End All Others
Feb 16th @ 6:00AM
Whenever I watch one of these kind of movies, I am left with one nagging thought. No, it’s not that the science is a little way too out there. Or that due to sheer mathematical probability the main characters should have died at least a dozen times over. The thought that bothers me, and actually makes these movies more enjoyable, is this: “Wow, they must have been pretty damn high to think this crap up.” It makes sense, right? Why [...]
Go Speed Racer Go!
Feb 6th @ 6:00AM
For movie night this past week, with the ‘Lost’ premiere siphoning off anybody that might have even come, we decided to watch Speed Racer. This movie is definitely soft science fiction, but I am compelled to share it with the world. For one, because this is one of the most visually delightful movies I’ve ever seen, I mean talk about eye-popping cornucopia of colors that makes the soul of your retina cry to death with uncontrolled blissful joy. It certainly didn’t hurt [...]
Sundance Film Festival 2010
Feb 2nd @ 6:00AM
So this year I got to go to Sundance for the first time ever. The person in which I lost my SFF virginity with was Luke, not new to him though. What a time! We started out by seeing A Prophet, which is a great, very great, french prison drama. You wouldn’t think you come out of that feeling good, but you do. If you ever get the chance, see it.
We saw the Shorts Program III and a Documentary Showcase. [...]
Bad, So Bad: Splice, A Comedy
Jan 31st @ 5:42PM
I find it hard to describe this movie. This post talks about it a little, mentioned actors and the director. Though I must say that after a full 20 hour day of the Sundance Film Festival, Splice was actually a really great way to end it. If you’ve heard what people are saying about it, well, I’m going to say things a little differently.
First off, don’t ever go see this movie. After reading this post, hopefully you’ll have no reason [...]
Sunny Sun, Sunshine
Jan 26th @ 6:00AM
Ok, this isn’t anything new, I’ve mentioned this movie several times and just recently watched it with some friends. So I thought I should give it its own review.
Directed by Dany Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, 28 Days Later), written by Alex Garland (also wrote 28 Days Later and writing the 2012 announced Halo movie), staring Cillian Murphy (Scarecrow) and Chris Evans (Push). Released back in July of 2007, this movie went mostly unnoticed, but garnished some good reviews under its own [...]
An Original of Originals, Das Metropolis
Jan 20th @ 7:00AM
Having finally got around to it, watching a silent film from 1927 that is supposed to be a pinnacle of modern SF and film in general was, in a word, enlightening. The movie which I speak of, naturally, is Metropolis. Now, I am no student of film, just a fan. But as I see it, every time I thought to myself “Well that’s been over done,” or “More of this?” I had to realize that this film was not being [...]
